The trip of last weekend reminded me of my love of solo backpacking. Day hikes are wonderful. I get to see an area unencumbered by equipment. My day hikes are often how I choose to spend my social time. Experiencing Read More …

For the third year in a row, we’ve done a tour of the Boulder Open Space on foot. It is a traverse of the Boulder sky line. In 2006 and 2007, we called it the Boulder Grand Slam. Essentially doing Read More …

Brainard Cabin is a rustic and historical place located in the Brainard Lake recreation area. The cabin is a popular place in winter; ski or snowshoe, grab a cup of cocoa and continue the jaunt for the day. Typically, volunteers Read More …

A very long day of ski touring to Thunder Lake. During the winter, it was almost 15 miles and ~2300' elev gain with much of the trail barely broken. No matter, it was an awesome day. The day started with Read More …

Sangree Hut

I love hut trips. Hut trips combine many things in life I enjoy: Being outdoors in the fresh air, getting together with friends, enjoying good food and wine and just enjoying the simple pleasure of life. I've always thought of Read More …

Snowshoeing (Gasp!) and A Long Traverse

Snowshoeing. It is accessible to anyone. It is a great way to introduce people to winter. It can be fun. It is something I used to do a lot of. Then I discovered (and became decent at) ski touring. I Read More …

Exploratory Skiing

I wanted to explore something different on skis. Rather than go to places I know well, I wanted to see something a little off the beaten ski path. My original plan on January 5th was to go to Mammoth Gulch. Read More …

Ultralight Catechism: When a Toolkit Becomes Dogma
New gear we liked for 2025: Solid, reliable tools that kept @ramblinghemlock and me warm, fed, and comfortable from the desert to the mountains. A mix of DIY, cottage gear, higher-end pieces, and budget picks — just the things that worked for two people who try to get outdoors as much as they can.
Some time on the Oregon Coast with @ramblinghemlock and the family.
A little hiking in Eugene before we head to the coast.
@ramblinghemlock and I squeezed in a local hike before heading off to see family. Red rocks, ancient images, and the La Sals dusted with snow in the distance; a perfect send-off.
@ramblinghemlock and I did some more structured rambling in an area we hadn’t visited in a while. We even set a new PR one day - No more than a mile from camp and eight hours of consistent hiking!
