Gear Review – Squak Camp Dress

My New Favorite Car Camping Staple: The Squak Camp Dress

I didn’t expect to fall in love with a fleece dress, but I found that the Squak Camp Dress has quickly become my go-to for car camping, road trips, and cool evenings outside. It hits that rare sweet spot: it’s functional, flattering, and just cute enough that I feel good wearing it around camp with friends.

Here’s why it’s become a core part of my cooler weather kit:

    • Looks good, feels better. This isn’t some oversized sweatshirt disguised as a dress. It actually fits my body. The cut is shaped for women, not too boxy, and with a little extra coverage around the hips, which I really appreciate on chilly nights. My hips tend to get cold when I’m camping, so having that fleece layer down past my waist makes a real difference.

    • Again, it fits me well. I’m 5’10″ with a long torso, long arms, and a body that’s shaped like… well, a woman. This dress actually fits. The sleeves extend all the way to my wrists, and the hem falls just above my knees. It’s long enough to feel cozy, short enough to move freely.  It’s also roomy without being baggy, which means I can layer leggings or even thermal bottoms underneath on cold desert mornings without feeling like I’m in a sack.
  • Great for camp life. Whether I’m walking around camp, setting up gear, or sitting around with a mug of hot cocoa, this dress keeps me warm without overheating. The grid fleece has that same breathability I love in the Squak hoodie, but with enough warmth for those canyon country evenings when the wind picks up.

  • Layering made easy. I can easily slip on or take off warmer leggings underneath without a hassle. No bunching, no wrestling with zippers. Just simple, warm layering that works.

  • Versatile hood and pocket. The hood fits nicely and keeps my neck and face warm, especially helpful in the high desert wind, where a hat alone doesn’t quite cut it. The kangaroo pocket is deep and functional: I stash gloves there, warm my hands, or store a snack. Like the hoodie, the dress also has thumbholes, which help keep the sleeves in place and add a bit of extra warmth.

  • Camping-tested. I’ve worn this dress for multiple nights on the road and around camp. The fabric still looks good, doesn’t hold odors, and feels great against the skin, even after a few days of use. That’s more than I can say for most of my outdoor layers.

At about 14 ounces and $70, it’s priced fairly, especially for a Utah-based company, and something that I’ll wear all season long. I liked it enough to start reaching for it as soon as the sun goes down or when I’m hanging out at the trailhead after a hike.

Final Thoughts

I wanted something that looked good and worked in real outdoor settings, especially when I’m camping with friends. The Squak Camp Dress delivers. It’s cozy, well-fitted, thoughtfully designed, and has earned a permanent spot in my car camping duffel.
