And the rain will come

Joan and I managed a few local hikes between Moab’s recent downpours.

After a summer of 105°F temperatures and bone-dry conditions, fall brought flash floods, heavy rain in a short period, and increasingly washed-out roads.

Arches reported nearly five inches of rain in October: roughly half the precipitation our high-desert home typically receives in an entire year.

That throws a major curveball into our outdoor plans.

Hiking in the rain? Fine.

Camping in the rain? Not ideal, but sometimes comforting, especially when the sound of rain on our shelter lulls us to sleep.

Driving down muddy roads miles from pavement? No fun. And potentially expensive!

So we kept things local again this weekend, finding hikes near pavement, enjoying rock images, doing some site stewardship, and soaking up Saturday’s sunshine before the heavy rains returned on Sunday.

Here’s hoping for a Dry November…in more ways than one.
