Fleece Types Explained: Classic, Grid, Alpha, Octa, Microgrid, & Goat Grid

My first video in four years!

A friend asked me about the different types of fleece. After I explained them to her, both she and Joan said, “You should make a video about this.”

So I did. And here it is!

A practical, field-tested look at the different fleece types available for backpacking, hiking, camping, and other outdoor use.

I compare classic solid fleece, grid fleece, microgrid, Alpha Direct, Octa, and the newer Goat Grid fabric. Each type has strengths and trade-offs in warmth, breathability, durability, weight, cost, and performance while moving and around camp.

No single fleece is “best.” As with most outdoor gear, the right choice depends on how and where you use it.

A few notes:

  1. Yes, I realized I called zippers “pockets” twice. Doh!
  2. Please excuse some of the framing. This is a lo-fi, DIY video. 🙂
  3. And why yes, I filmed the conclusion separately after a hike. You may notice the scrape on my forearm. Ha!
