A quick camping and hiking trip out in the La Sal A quick camping and hiking trip out in the La Sal Mountains that form the backdrop of town.. In less than an hour, we went from the desert heat to the aspens, set up our camp, and had dinner going. Good to keep it local and to see how the mountains recovered since the #packcreekfire.

On a lighter note, one of the joys of our new home On a lighter note, one of the joys of our new home is that our new location is a mile or so from downtown and right near the bike paths or lanes.
..
I WFH full-time now, and the only time we take the truck is for our outdoor trips.
Joan commutes almost daily by bike through red rock canyons and over the Colorado River to Arches. Not a bad morning! We bike to see our friends in town, do quick pickups, errands, etc.
..
We find it relaxing, less stressful, "free exercise," and quicker than dealing with the sometimes crazy traffic in our little desert town. We used to each bike for errands where we lived in the past, and I think we both missed it.
..
The exception? Our once-a-week major grocery pickup. It seems silly to start the truck, drive, get stuck in tourist traffic, park, dodge cars in the crowded parking lot, etc. All for apples and spinach! 😃
..
So with Joan working today, I put together a simple bike trailer meant for children but works well for getting groceries for two.
Success!
..
Joan's trusty 2005 Honda hybrid just turned 200k miles recently. But when it finally needs to get replaced (it's a Honda, so who knows when!), I see us as a one-vehcile household. Even if fuel prices go down again, I don't see car prices going down, and I think $30k+ for a new vehicle could get better spent elsewhere.
..
Nothing like living in a town of 5k or so people that get up to 3 million visitors to incentivize NOT driving through it! 😜

Lincoln had flaws. But of all the presidents in our pantheon, I think I admire Lincoln the most due to his insights and convictions leavened with a practical nature.

Arguably, he made the United States a country united in more than just name. And now we are turning into...something else.
@ramblinghemlock and I took a relaxing weekend to @ramblinghemlock and I took a relaxing weekend to escape the heat up in the La Sal Mountains outside Moab.
...
With the rain, t-storms, and the wind in the forecast, we figured a simple car camping trip with some hiking seemed to give us more options to roll with the weather than a backpacking trip.
...
The first day brought us to the cusp of treeline just as the graupel moved in. We made it back to camp in time to set up our truck tarp for a warm and dry place to cook dinner and hang out.
...
At about 1AM we heard a loud SMACK. That morning we saw two "Widowmakers" not far from our truck! :O (📷 #10 co Joan) ).
...
Joan picked a great site for our tent that left us dry and the truck was also far away from trees, too. Lots of shrapnel, of sorts, not far from the tarp, however. Phew! The tarp held up very well with all the wind.
...
After breakfast, we did some hiking and scouting for future trips on a mesa. The dinosaur prints with water from the recent rain proved a delight.
...
An excellent weekend off the desert floor and very close to our home.
..
Based on Joan's post, seems a fair amount of interest in the truck tarp. You can read more about the @sjkgear Road House Tarp via link in profile.
