Our original plan meant going up one road, driving Our original plan meant going up one road, driving up some muddy and icy road conditions, and, at least, driving for two more hours round-trip. We'd rather hike.
..
So we did "Plan B" and went to see some well-known, and always magnificent, places, saw some new places for us, and enjoyed the quiet and stunning canyon on colder December night.
..
Hot drinks, puffy layers, and chocolate kept us warm.

The Colorado Sun had a recent and excellent articl The Colorado Sun had a recent and excellent article on the cost of the “free” outdoors, be it gas, permits, and, of course, the gear.

..
So, I want outdoor clothing that ends up being functional and not necessarily fashionable at the end and will do what is intended. And like any tool, I use different tools for different jobs.
..
And my outdoor puffies are no different.
..
In 2023, puffies are a “go-to” layer for winter and all seasons. Light, compressible, and capable. Though it is not the ideal layer for all situations, it is unusual for a person not to take this layer overall, especially when on extended backpacking trips during typical three-season conditions.
..
And like other clothing or gear, Joan and I tend to have a quiver of puffies for different uses.
