Christmas in Canyon Country

This year, our holiday tree means junipers, pinyon pines, and canyon floors decorated with a dusting of frost on our high desert plateau.

We had the canyon to ourselves on a quiet and cold Christmas weekend.

Santa did not visit us over the evening, but we saw red rock and canyon walls and traveled the paths of people who celebrated the solstice differently.

One image stood out at the junction of canyons with its rows of dots, splashes of color, and geometric patterns depicted between two images of arches. And with actual arches above us, not by coincidence, I’m sure.

We walked the canyon walls and poked around, continuing to see what we could see.

Our Christmas did not involve a yule log or a dinner with all the trimmings. But I don’t think we can complain about how we decided to spend the holiday.
