I recently went on a rare group trip to a landscape that had changed. A place we had seen before and knew well.
This past summer’s Babylon Fire changed the landscape.
With fire comes floods.
We heard rain overnight and woke to a raging torrent. After the Babylon Fire, flooding was inevitable. The water carried heavy ash.
I felt as if I was bearing witness to a changed, post-fire landscape. Fire and flood shape the environment; some history passes away, while other traces remain untouched. The land eventually recovers: Some of it recently, some of it long after my lifetime.
The land changes. But it endures.
