It was a big year for site stewardship thanks to funding from our Utah State Legislation! We've broken out some stats below, take a look! In 2021 we had 221 site stewards and monitored 400 sites for over 500 training hours! To make this happen our stewards traveled more than 39,000 miles and served more than 2,600 hours! We are so grateful to have such an awesome team to work with that is also so committed to protecting and preserving our Utah lands! A weekend in Canyonlands ... @ramblinghemlock and A weekend in Canyonlands ... @ramblinghemlock and I enjoy winter camping in Canyonlands National Park. It’s quiet, fewer people, and the scenery with the winter light always makes for sublime evenings for sunsets and enjoying the night sky with some hot chocolate. It’s not the time of the year for miles but to savor the red rock, winter sky, and the near solitude of winter. … After our trip to Canyonlands, we stopped by a well-known landmark for indigenous people, travelers along the Old Spanish Trail, and many a climber today. Alas, the area will soon have a glamping resort ¼ mile away. We saw construction equipment parked at the future site. We wanted to see the space before canvas tents, farm-to-table meals, and mindful yoga sessions for the 9.9% became the arch’s prominent feature. ;) … #Canyonlands #CanyonlandsNationalPark #hiking #camping #winter #pictographs #utah #moab #moabutah

After Davis Mountains State Park, we reconfigured After Davis Mountains State Park, we reconfigured our trip to spend some time in the Organ Mountains outside of Las Cruces, NM. .. But we saw the weather forecast of a snowstorm hitting a bulk of the Intermountain West. So we headed home a couple of days early. We unloaded the truck and made it home just before the first flakes fell and sorted out and cleaned our gear the following day. And some hiking locally after. ... When Moab is your home, spending time locally never becomes terrible. ... #Moab #Utah #hiking #camping #lascruces #newmexico #organmountains
On our last day at Big Bend, we hopped online to l On our last day at Big Bend, we hopped online to look at the weather forecast in the Guadalupe Mountains north of us. With 80+ MPH gusts forecast for the ridgelines, we rethought our backpacking trip. ... We decided to drive 2 hours or so north to @davismountainssp that featured some interesting hikes where the desert meets the grasslands before the higher mountain areas. Once parked, we did not drive for over two days and could also hike right from the campsite. The nightly hot showers, included, seemed decadent compared to the previous week. At night we even spotted a javelina. Of course, I did not have my camera handy! ... On our way out we visited the nearby American Civil War and frontier-era Ft. Davis where the famous 10th Cavalry, aka The Buffalo Soldiers, were once posted. ... Not the post-Big Bend trip we planned but still a delightful and restful stop for two days. ... #hiking #camping #Texas #ftdavis #davismountainsstatepark
Big Bend National Park - Part 3 - On the ridge ... Big Bend National Park - Part 3 - On the ridge ... Our last two days in @bigbendnps saw us at another backcountry campsite off a dirt road. These backcountry sites are quite lovely as you have it to yourself off a bumpy dirt road. There are no amenities besides a space for the vehicle and a tent and a food storage locker. There is no picnic table, water, or pit toilet (pack out your TP). You get isolation, stunning views, and quiet. We like it. … We had easy access to a lightly used trail from our campsite that brought us into high elevation areas with pines, oaks, shade, and that sight of all beautiful sights in the desert - water! An oasis off the desert floor, especially as temps went to 100F that day. … After our hike, we did some more well-known sites along the Rio Grande and enjoyed wading on a hot day. … The last night and morning at our campsite, and Big Bend, brought another “light show.” I think it is safe to say @ramblinghemlock, and I will return to this magnificent area again. … #RioGrande #RioBravo #Mexico #Texas #hiking #camping #BigBend #BigBendNationalPark
Big Bend National Park - Part 2 - On the mesa ... Big Bend National Park - Part 2 - On the mesa ... @ramblinghemlock and I spent the second portion of our trip backpacking a mesa on the @bigbendnps outer edge. The trails, though still good, aren't the usual popular NPS-grade trails most see in the park. A network of known, but largely unmarked, horse packer trails form a network of paths on the mesa, too. ... From this mesa we could see across into Mexico mere feet away across the Rio Grande in some cases and spy the rapids (When the water flows high) just upstream from one of the most popular destinations in the park. But we had the view to ourselves. Thanks to @horsecake22 for the tip! ... Joan and I experienced one of the best campsites we've ever had with stupendous sunrise and sunset views just over the border. We could see a few twinkling lights in the Mexico mountains across the river. but otherwise the night sky did not have any obscuring lights. ... An amazing place.
