Having your photo taken at the Appalachian Trail Conservancy (ATC) headquarters in Harpers Ferry, West Virginia, has become a standard ritual for those hikers intending on walking the entire A.T. One of the functions of the ATC, as the lead organization in managing and protecting the A.T., is to maintain the official 2,000-miler registry of all those who have completed the A.T.
So here I am about half-way through my Appalachian Trail thru-hike…. not quite 24 years old (my birthday is on May 19th), a full head of black hair, knock-off Tevas, a hopsital scrub shirt (does Kent County Hospital want the shirt back??? 🙂 ) and an old swimsuit used as hiking shorts.
Twelve years later, look how much my hiking attired has improved!
er…maybe not?????
1998, A FULL HEAD OF BLACK HAIR. 2011 A HEAD FULL OF EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE. NOT A BAD TRADE OFF.

Were you hiking the AT in that photograph or going into surgery Dr Magnanti?
I used to work as an orderly. The 50/50 (poly-cotton) scrub shirts were AWESOME for hiking. 🙂
