A recharge in the San Juans

My mental battery is feeling a bit low.

Dad once told me, “The horse that works will always work.”

A working-class aphorism that more academically inclined people have published papers about, and I could dwell upon it. But it’s an old story for me and others.

In any case, I do what I always do when I need a mental recharge.

I go to the mountains.

Lacking the mental energy for anything ambitious, even if the body could commit, I managed to get in two nights of relaxed backpacking, accompanied by some reading and a quiet, secluded campsite.

Sometimes that’s enough.

I’ve got a longer trip coming up in August. A full week up in the high country at the cusp of Autumn. That should recharge the mental battery to at least half charge—perhaps more.

But in the meantime, those two nights should help.

At least for a little bit.

For now.
