Three days at Cave Lake

State parks are still a vestige of how most people did camping in the past.

Meaning, a family-friendly place with fishing, some hiking, a chance to swim or go canoeing, and the semi-obligatory campfire. And often inexpensive.

For Joan and I, Cave Lake State Park proved perfect for our needs. The town of Ely is only twenty minutes away so we could take care of some items, go shopping, get some laundry done, and visit the local USFS office for maps and some excellent local knowledge on other hikes in the area.

At Cave Lake we not only enjoyed the low cost site that included hot showers, but also enjoyed our evening strolls around the lake, an exquisite hike in the park along a ridge with magnificent wildflowers, and ventured to the nearby Schell Wilderness with its alpine ridge walks among more bristlecone pines and more early summer wildflower delights.

We left just as a more rambunctious holiday crowd moved in and planned on spending the 4th backpacking in a different wilderness area.

In the meantime, eastern Nevada has been treating us well. So much to see out here and we are savoring what the area has to offer.

We did not explore too much beyond this area of Nevada. But with California being so expensive, crowded, and more well-known, we are in no rush, either. 🙂
