My Dad voluntarily went back to Army active duty during the Korean War. Bought a 1951 Buick with Dynaflow transmission and a one-p bedroom house trailer. Within two yeara, we lived in Ft. Benning, Georgia; Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas; Camp.Cooke (now.Vandenberg.AFB)’ Lompoc,California; and.Ft. Lewis in Tacoma, Washington. Many adventures: getting stuck in red clay mud in Georgia, an earthquake in Lompoc, half day drive up a narrow mountain road only to encounter a bridge with a weight limit.less than the car and teailer, a glass of.orange juice on the kitchen table that survived a day on the road before I knocked it over.that night. My 4-month-old brother had chicken pox when we started the trip. No fast food restaurants. One parent took me into a restaurant while.the other waited for take out in the car with the baby. Crossing the desert, Mom fainted.from.the heat (no car air conditioning). The next couple of days we stayed in motels.with pools during the day while.Dad slept and Mom tried to keep me.occupied. They’d then drive at night when it was cooler. Parents thought the Long, Long Trailer.movie was really funny!
