Good evening! The Sept conditions on the GDTA website is instructive: http://www.greatdividetrail.com/september-2018-trail-and-road-conditions/
I am not a local, so take this advice with a grain of salt. But the northern part of the GDT reminds me of the higher elevations of Colorado (further south, but higher in elevation), meaning Fall with good colors. Always a chance of snow, but a good time to hike in general. A friend of mind in Canmore AB loves hiking in early Sept FWIW. Obviously the more you push into the month into later vs. early Sept., the more potential for worse weather conditions.

I will be hiking the GDT this summer. My question is about timing. I will be starting around the same time you did, sometime between the 21st-23rd of July and will be hiking Northbound. But I don't expect to be finishing as quickly as you did. What kind of weather should I expect come early September (if I am still on trail by that time) in the northern parts of the trail? When I hiked the CDT in 2016 I ended at the Canadian border on Sept 25th and had already experienced bouts of snowy weather here and there in MT before finishing. I am wondering if I should go south bound but really had my heart on finishing up North.

A rough guestimate adding in resupply, navigation, and "just because." I'm on no really tight schedule, so who knows. But, I'll have a LOT of daylight vs winter. Gotta do something with all the daylight besides drinking Molson! :) Amazing how many trails and routes Atlas covers now. Alice, Paul, and Ryan do good work!
