“…ask for the ancient paths, Where the good way is, and walk in it; And you will find rest for your souls.” -Jeremiah 6:16

Presidents Day Weekend saw much warmer temperatures then I would like for backcountry skiing. And the avalanche danger was still high.

So my mind turned from skiing to backpacking. A chance to spend two nights in the backcountry with the stars above me and the ground beneath me.

Simple. Relaxing. And something I was looking forward to as backpacking is ultimately my favorite way to spend time outdoors.

Where to go?

Utah beckoned with its deep canyons, ancient artifacts and red rocks.

But the drive over I70 on a holiday weekend during winter, quite frankly, scared me off. A six-hour drive could easily turn into a 13 hour ordeal.

Some trips are done for a backcountry experience. Other trips are done to see a unique area or contain much deep history.

Dinosaur NM? A little of everything. It is a trip that someone esp wanted to see.

So over Memorial Day Weekend, we packed up the car, drove out to this remote corner of Utah/Colorado and explored the area.

A trip Dinosaur National Monument can be divided into four distinct sections IMO:

The Cultural (Fossils and Petroglyphs)

The Canyon views

The River

The Backcountry

On this trip, we explored the first three but not the last part. By all accounts, the backcountry of Dinosaur is supposed to be pretty special. Remote, largely un-populated and rivaling anything found in other parts of the Colorado Plateau. It is something I’d love to explore….but this was not the trip for it.

Part two of my Utah trip.

What do you do for a living?

–American small talk often found at parties. 🙂

If the first part of my Utah trip was about walking all day and being more immersed in the backcountry, then the second part was about day hikes, side trips and even a little leisurely wind shield touristing. (Is that a word? 🙂 )

After my Coyote Gulch experience, I made my way up Hole in the Rock Road and decided to take a day hike to Broken Bow Arch.

Near the trailhead, the views towards the Straight Cliffs and the plateau above was a sight that was impressive in its own right.

Arid, rugged and starkly beautiful.

The trailhead at Willow Gulch was reached and my hike quickly began.

We had a job to get to, family and friends visiting from out of town and too much to do to take off for the three weeks (or more!) that would have been ideal.

Instead, we did an equally low-key ‘mini-moon’ to go with our low key wedding.

We decided to go to Mesa Verde National Park. A chance to see a place with a deep past that still reverberates in the current history of the southwest.

It would not be a backcountry experience, but it will still be a memorable trip.

We arrived at the park in late morning after camping out near Wolf Creek Pass the night before.

Quickly picked out a camp spot, paid for it and immediately booked a $3 tour of both the Cliff Palace and the Balcony House.
