Black and white photography[1] has always been something I loved.

I am not a professional photographer by any means, but I do love photography to capture certain scenes in the outdoors. I am not a photographer; I am an outdoors person who happens to take a lot of photos! And among these photos are B&W ones.

B&W photography is a good tool to have in a person’s outdoor photography kit.

Certain scenes look more dramatic. Or a certain feeling is evoked. Or certain details are highlighted.

So when my friend and fellow Trail Groove writer Ted Ehrlich asked me to participate in “Five Day B&W Photo Challenge” on Facebook, I was more than happy to contribute.

I tried to pick photos that were different from each other and evoked various themes in the outdoors and were more than landscape photos.

Why Black and White Outdoor Photography?

Personally I think B&W photos can be just as striking as the color photos often done by most outdoor enthusiasts.

Note: I am not a professional photographer. Just an enthusiastic amateur who enjoys photography as something that supplements my love for the outdoors. This just my opinion…take it for what it is worth. 🙂

Also, technically I am discussing “monochromatic photography”. Since most people, myself included, use B&W photography as a generic name for this type of photography, I will too. Though technically incorrect, B&W is a label understood by most people more readily for this type of photography.

Black and White Portraits

Black and White (B&W) photos are often used for portrait photography. B&W (or its closely related cousin – sepia tone) evoke a certain drama and mood.

Outdoor Photography – Point and Shoot or DSLR?

But which camera to bring? A Point Shoot (P&S) or a DSLR?

Part of the reason why I love the outdoors is taking photos.

Something about capturing a beautiful overlook just right in the evening light is awesome. Every time I look at a favorite photo, I can remember where I was, what I was doing and who I was with. I am almost there again.

My love of photography started off innocently enough. Took some photos, people complemented me on them, started taking more, became a little better and arrived at the point where I hate go on any trip without a camera. Once I delved even deeper into my hobby a DSLR was bought. So, yeah, I am kinda hooked. 🙂

So what camera to take? Should a full featured DSLR be brought with its amazing ability to make adjustments and have great detail?
