For the past two years, my buddy Josh and I have taken his son Avery out on a backpacking trip for Father’s Day weekend.

As I’ve mentioned in the past, I am very close to this family. The children refer to me as “Uncle Mags” and, I’d like to think, spoil them accordingly. 🙂

This year, the youngest boy Elijah would be joining us. At five years old, he is already an experienced camper. He recently hiked Sanitas with a very small day pack in anticipation of this trip.

We left Friday night and made our way to the Lost Park TH just outside of Jefferson. A quick campsite was made off the FS road for the evening. The boys were rather enamored with all the shell casings in the area. Their mother would not be as enamored on Sunday when she found about…..

At work, I’m known as “that outdoor guy”.

The Kia is often covered in a fine patina of dirt or mud on a Monday morning.

The co-workers don’t ask if I have been out for the weekend, they just assume.

And more than few wonder how I found myself working in IT when it is the outdoors I obviously love (I ask myself that question often. 😉 )

Two months ago, a few of us put into motion an overnight backpacking trip.

Schedules were cleared, permission secured from their families and we headed to the early season favorite of the Lost Creek Wilderness for their first overnighter. (One has never been camping either!)

The chosen area was a perennial favorite for early season jaunts: the Lost Creek Wilderness.

We met at a local park and ride, distributed some extra gear and clothing I had and made our way to Bailey, CO and the trail head.

The Lost Creek Wilderness of Colorado is often my “go to” for early summer backpacks.

In June, the snow is usually melted off, the scenery is great and the wildflowers are blooming.

This past weekend, I had a last minute opportunity to backpack.

I quickly pulled out my dog eared copy of good ole’ Trail Illustrated map #105 and eyed a route I have not done in a while: the Brookeside – Payne loop.

If other loops in the Lost Creek Wilderness (LCW) offer amazing ridge walks and tundra views, this loop is more sublime.

Large meadows, meandering creeks, wildflowers and amazing groves of aspen are what this loop offers.

On Saturday morning, when plans had changed, I quickly packed up, grabbed some food and off I went up 285.
