Interesting. I’m also a wide brimmed hat + collared button up shirt hiker. I was imagining that a hoodie would be too hot, so it’s nice to see that sense validated here. Another thing I like is that on a button up shirt, typically there’s a button at the cuff. When I hike, I unbutton the cuff which provides a lot of primo ventilation — while still affording full sun protection. Lastly, tightly woven somewhat loose shirts are way better in mosquito country than more open fabrics (e.g. T shirt type material) that lay more flatly on the skin. I think I’ll stick with my hat + button up shirt combo.

Glad it worked! No need for special outdoor clothing when "regular" clothing works well enough. :)

In reply to <a href="https://pmags.com/sun-hoodie-first-impressions#comment-699166">Greg</a>.

As mentioned, it is the hood that's a no-go for me. I do not like the limited peripheral vision nor how it traps in heat regardless of material.
Additionally, I've had terrible luck with lightweight wool shirts for longevity and can not justify the price.

My simple hat and long sleeve button down combo work well and are inexpensive and durable.

I highly recommend giving a light-weight wool/wool-blend sun hoody a go before writing them off. They're chalk and cheese compared with most of the heavy, poorly breathable synthetic sun hoodies that are around. The only issue is they can be expensive.

I absolutely love my light-colored Icebreaker Sphere LS Hoody (I'm not sure if it's available in the US anymore - it appears to be available in some countries). It's around 130 weight wool, and I've used it for several years all over the US, from the hot/dry deserts of CA & Utah, mountaineering in the PNW, and the variably hot/humid to cool hiking in the NE. There are options from Voormi and Smartwool, and there may be other choices too, if the Icebreaker option is unavailable.

Ha! I decided to give your recommendation of the western snap shirts a try on my hike of the NNML and just realized that I ended up getting the exact same color as yours! The Coeval Club shirts are a good deal- breathable, quick drying, versatile, pop up collar for neck protection, lots of color options. They run a little large, so I sized down.

In reply to <a href="https://pmags.com/sun-hoodie-first-impressions#comment-699148">Paul Mags</a>.

When I follow the first link, the first entry I see is, "Men's Western Long Sleeve Snap Firm Finish Work Shirt" for $34.99, and in the details, it's listed at 100% cotton.

The Coeval Club shirt is actually listed third.

Thanks for the suggestions!

Any place that sells "farm and ranch wear" will have these shirts.
Walmart has these shirts in abundance a well.

I've never paid more than $20, even new.
Finally, the <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Mens-Western-Shirts/s?k=Men%27s+Western+Shirts" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow ugc">link I gave</a> show <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Coevals-Club-Sleeve-Western-Buttons/dp/B0775YJL8R/ref=sr_1_2_sspa?dchild=1&keywords=Men%27s+Western+Shirts&qid=1600711967&sr=8-2-spons&psc=1&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUExMko4MkxCSzNSQklMJmVuY3J5cHRlZElkPUEwNzU5OTQ5MTFDNjE0RjRNWFcxUiZlbmNyeXB0ZWRBZElkPUEwMTEwNDcyMVlFWkw1QVVPSTQ1QSZ3aWRnZXROYW1lPXNwX2F0ZiZhY3Rpb249Y2xpY2tSZWRpcmVjdCZkb05vdExvZ0NsaWNrPXRydWU=" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow ugc">this 60/40 blend as the first result.</a> (polycotton)
You may want to look at the other options as well. It is slightly more at $25 but may save you time vs. going to a store.

I followed some of your other links about your thrift store Cotton/Poly shirts.

If one does not have time to drive across town and go through racks of men's shirts at the thrift store looking for one that meets the specs, where can someone find a Cotton/Poly button-up or snap-up LS shirt that's budget friendly?

Most of the links leading to Wrangler on Amazon were for 100% cotton "Western" style shirts. I poked around on Columbia, and all I could find are 100% Nylon or 100% Poly.
