As a recreationist, it is an interesting debate. In general, I don’t find the idea of an oil rig here or there all that offensive. After a couple of days of hiking without seeing anyone, it’s kind of refreshing to see a sliver of civilization that someone visits maybe once a day. On the flip side, some popular areas dedicated to recreation become quite tiresome due to the overwhelming tourist draw (such as the Grand Canyon rim mentioned in the documentary). In general, I suppose I would prefer to run into one oil rig vs. 1000 tourists. I haven’t looked far enough into the debate around this specific case to have a definitive opinion, but I do think the documentary at least raises the question of “What is the best/most appropriate way to protect these lands?” National Monument status sounds great, but have we fully considered other options?
