I just got back from hiking the Northern New Mexico Loop, and used a lightweight duffle bag to check my pack and items, then stuffed it in a USPS priority mail envelope to send back home once I arrived, then had it included in my final resupply box, to use again at the airport. I’ve had agents not let me fly with poles (before I realized they weren’t permitted as carry-on) but have never had trouble with my fuel canister stove or a lighter. If where I am flying to has an REI or similar store, I also find it helpful to order a fuel canister about a week before my trip, to pick up online, since sometimes I’ve had problems finding fuel canisters in stock when I arrive. REI will hold online orders for up to 2 weeks, typically.

I have often been surprised by the number of things that are easily available in the states, but not in Canada. One of the items was Hungry Jack dehydrated hash browns. You can find them in almost any grocery store in the states, but no one in Canada seems to be familiar with them. Alcohol is another. It’s easy to find Denatured Alcohol or yellow HEET here in the states, but in Canada, it may not be sold in the same places or by the same name. I think that Methylated Spirits may be the term used North of the border. Another thing to be aware of, although it may not be an issue, is how credit cards compare to cash as far as ease of use and the number of businesses that will take credit cards. I have reached the point where I seldom use cash anymore, but that may not be the case everywhere.
