Paul, I enjoyed your advice and agree. However, at 86, I’m not backpacking any longer, but occassional day-hikes of 4-8 miles and kayaking keep my wife (80) and I enjoying the outdoors as much as 35 years of backpacking above 10,000 feet each summer in the High Sierra did years ago. Our hikes now are limited to real trails after a less than wonderful hike (slips, falls, and skin tears) in Asdown Gorge near our home in Cedar City, UT. It’s rated “Non-technical” but rating aren’t based on age!

Paul, excellent advice. We farmed vegetables for 40 years, which kept us in pretty good shape but now that we are retired we feel we are in even better all around shape because we walk regularly, get in decent cardio, lift weights and work on flexibility and the core. It does make short backpacking trips much easier to do but I do extra training for the longer walks. At 69 I do feel like there are many more years to enjoy carrying a pack!

Thanks! I've always admired how you still get at it. Something for me to aspire towards!

Top notch blog post. I am about 20 years older than you and I still am quite functional. But walking is just not enough at my age. I lift as heavy weights as I can only twice a week. I need more time to recover. I am absolutely giddy when Strava lets me know that I have broken a personal record in a segment of trail. Losing weight is huge. It’s much less work to force along. Let’s keep going! I plan to reblog your post – it’s so good.
