So true, and if GFM does not work one can also just hike and request shelter, food, etc., along the route via FB. That also appears successful. Crazy :-)

I personally agree about begging for money to go on a trip and I would never do it. However, I have mixed feelings about it overall. If someone is skilled enough to have a trip funded good on them. I just don't want to be constantly solicited to help fund someone else.

For me, it comes down to who is asking and why. You need to put your own skin in the game before you ask for help of others. Said that, if someone has worked very hard and needs a bit of help to fulfill the dream of a thru-hike - and I know them and their character - I would (and have) helped. But I am wary based on experience. It infuriates me to watch hikers play poor when it comes to donations to trail angels, for example, when they always seem to have enough money to grab a room, pizza and a case of keystone light (which is infuriating in itself - dear God, drink something good), in every trail town. For this reason, if I am going to sponsor anyone, it's with someone who I share a similar ethos. Hike Your Own Hike - if you want to party non-stop at every trail town, by all means, go for it (after all what are vacations for?). And as long as you Fund Your Own Hike, nobody can complain.

In reply to <a href="https://pmags.com/go-fund-yourself-a-modest-proposal#comment-572890">Clay Bonnyman Evans</a>.

Hah! :) Being serious, I truly don't think it is an age thing as more of a cultural thing. I am of one 16 cousins on Mom's side. We range in age from 21 - 44. I can't picture my under-30 cousins doing a GoFundMe. One of my younger cousins, for example, is paying for college by being in the Air Guard. They are all very responsible, awesome people I am glad to call my relatives. (Don't know if the reverse is true. :D). OTOH, I know of people in Boulder who make use of "charity" events or GFM to fund their vacations and they ain't under 30.
