It’s not a bad bushwhack at all, I found. I did it in spring as well.

<a href="https://pmags.com/packrafting-dominguez-canyon-and-the-gunnison" rel="nofollow ugc">https://pmags.com/packrafting-dominguez-canyon-and-the-gunnison</a>

“Up Little Dominguez Canyon to Blackpoint. I’ve never done the upper portion of Little Domingez Canyon, and I’ve seen reports that described it as overgrown and difficult to follow. Perhaps Joan and I have different definitions of overgrown and too much experience following the old pack stock trails, but I found the alignment on the map is more or less correct. Just when I thought I had lost the faint path, I saw piles of old cow dung almost cairn-like and the logical place where pack stock may travel. I did not find it as difficult as others reported. YMMV.’<

Upper Little D has been considered for Wilderness designation, but I’m not sure of the current status.https://www.gmugrevision.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/Dominguez-Canyon-_-Map.pdf

And upper Little D is quite a bushwhack. Wagon Park and Bar X avoid the willows and oak but also the impressive solitude. There’s a useful online write up by Tomcat.

A friend and went up Little Dominguez a couple years ago. I “scouted” a route on the map up the canyon wall a couple miles before Black Point. We cliffed out and turned around. the willows in the upper part of the canyon are pretty intense. The creek was in full flood mode and we crossed it dozens of times in an often futile attempt to find the least brushy track. We saw no one. A beautiful, remote and tough little hike…

This looks like a great hike. I always love coming across old, abandoned homestead ruins in the backcountry!

It makes it fun when my loud family has a different definition of yelling vs. People from a different background! : D
