At a favorite place

Almost every fall, Joan and I bring some NPS colleagues of hers to the La Sal Mountains. Among them? Usually SCA interns new to Moab and not familiar with the area.

Though the part near our home is still in recovery, we can still access some favorite places.

We continued our tradition to a favorite campsite—a place with access to good hiking, peacefulness, and views from camp.

I break out the large camp kit, make some meals, and enjoy luxurious car camping.

The La Sal Mountains might be a small range, but at only an hour away, it provides a welcome contrast to the red rocks of the desert floor.

Our friends, who never went to the La Sal Mountains, found it astonishing that we camped at the edge of the treeline and found ourselves surrounded by aspens and pines while still so close to Moab.

Windy and brisk, the climb up to the peaks ends up challenging…

..but delightful.

PCO Joan.

I made a big pot of pasta fagioli that second evening, and we made it into our tents just as the evening rain lulled Joan and me to sleep.

We took a mellower but scenic hike on Sunday after a leisurely morning.

A relaxing weekend of camping, hiking, and good food with friends never disappoints. And especially when we show a place we’ve grown to love.
