I continue to explore my new home and all that it has to offer for exploration of the Colorado Plateau.
Micah and I went to the Fiery Furnace. A popular spot, but on a rainy day, we had it to ourselves.
And over the weekend, Joan and I explored Island in the Sky at Canyonlands National Park via a backpacking trip.
Presidents Day Weekend is the traditional start of the Spring tourist season in the Moab area. People from both the Salt Lak City area and the Colorado Front Range start making their way to our little town on the Colorado Plateau.
Our jaunt linked single track, the famous White Rim and the windy Shafer Trail jeep road. We had it to ourselves. But we know the Shafer Trail will soon be open again. And many people will use their jeeps and mountain bikes along White Rim.
We hiked into the canyon and found a secluded spot. A cool, but not overly cold, evening with a nearly full moon. Some hot cider with a splash of whiskey proved to be the perfect complement to the weekend.
The following morning brought more red rock, a view of the Colorado River, arches, desert bighorns.
And some snow proving, accumulating up to 6″ as I type, that the tourist season may be kicking off, but winter has not entirely left the Moab area. Yet.
An excellent trip in our backyard. And one of many more to come.
I’ve only been to Canyonlands once, what an amazing place. Of course, it was during the summer when it was SO hot. I love the look of the snow against the red rock. Hopefully, the next time we take a trip to Colorado Springs to visit the family we can make another trip into the park. I look forward to more of your “jaunts”.
